Whit, I'm sorry you're running into these issues. I'm grasping at
straws, but try running apt-cache show libgnutls26, or check which
version of libgnutls is installed. I have 2.12.14-5ubuntu3.1. I take
it for granted my VMs are normally up to date. 5ubuntu3 is the stock
version for 12.04, and apparently a 3.1 was released as an update.

Other than that, I'm stumped. Believe me I was quite motivated to get
it working, I was very happy when it did.

If you haven't had success with a live CD like Backtrack, the other
thing I would try is either Ubuntu 11.10 (I got that to work with even
the previous libraries) or Debian. The README files say the developers
use mostly Debian.
