IIRC there were some bugfixes around this topic. So using the latest
release of the OpenVAS version you use might already help.

However, are you sure you do not see a task on the slave system when
logged in with the same user you configured for the slave on your master?

Perhaps there is no network connection between the two. The master will
now and then retry and keep in the Requested status as long as it gets
no confirmation of the slave.
