Reindl, I originally tried building a VMWare image from the .iso but ran
into a lot of problems and it didn't work at all, so when I saw the
pre-built VMWare image I started using that. I'll try building the VMWare
image from an iso again.

well, when i am not able to solve whatever problems with a distribution than it's the wrong distribution for me and put a pre-built image in production just burries the lack of understanding and so hardly solves problems in the long term

you have a lot of things to consider in case of pre-built images like generate new ssh-keys, change all passwords which requires to know the setup in doubt just to mention a few

in short: when i am not able to setup a operating system at my own than i just don't use it or learn to deal with it to become able

Yes, new to Linux too!

How do get a different distribution or a newer release? This is the
latest VMWare release at the Kali website.

Maybe you are interested to build your own (and newest kali-linux) for
yourself. If so, you might want to take a look at the article on my
website:

http://www.ccpeine.de/?p=1152

Don't know, if the resulting ISO it can be changed to a vmware image

who in the world needs that way as well as a pre-built vmware image when you
just go to https://www.kali.org/downloads/, download the ISO image, insert
it into the virtual DVD drive and just install it inside the VM as on any
ordinary PC?
