I think I may have asked something wrong, I'm not wanting to "work around" 
anything.

What I was intending to ask, is I would like to have all of the OpenVas 
services start when the server starts up.

Like autoexec.bat in DOS would start certain things.

I would like the startup file (don't remember what it's called)
Download updates (openvas-nvt-sync & openvas-scapdata-sync)
Then start the necessary services, like openvasad

atomic repo privides packages including startup scripts

as newbie you really should not start with working around the package 
management and as professional you avoid it also whenever possible or build at 
least own packages instead "make install"
