like *every* Linux system should run a small MTA with a relayhost since there are often other tools like crond or logwatch which produce regulary mail that way and since "pickup" mostly works withour have a MTA running fills your disk
well and then come tools like smartd which want to send you a notify that one of your harddisks is about to die - a linux server without a sendmail-binary is not a finished linux server
