Thanks, this is way more than I expected :-) - and it seems that we did
not fiddle with this part of the code yet, so it's time to do so.
On a first glance this v2 version looks good to me, but I need to look
a bit more into details at the surrounding code to check whether it
might have interesting side effects (we're good at that).
