There is a box in the network connection for the private key password but Ileft it empty because vpnbook does not appear to supply the password. I assumed it was not used. I do not know where to find it.

When I followed the vpnbook set up advice on their website i was able to login without manually adding any extra passwords. My problem stems from trying to login via a network connection.

your client config above does not list any cert of private key yet openvpn requests one. My guess is that you're loading a different config file. Try running openvpn on the commandline first, e.g.
  openvpn --config vpnbook.conf
see if that works. Once you get that working, then create a button/shortcut .

I have to ask: where do I get the private key password or is there a way of telling the network manager that it is not needed?

I am wondering if I instead should indicate the server verification method does not require a private key password and see what happens, except I do not know how to do this. I went to the link and did not see any help there.

I am trying to access vpnbook. I am using Ubuntu 14.04.

I have set up the VPN network connectionand on one occasion was able to
access the server through the terminal but I prefer to do it via
anetwork connection button.

This is what the syslog records when I try to access the servervia a button:

What have I misunderstood?

the first message came through OK.
The relevant part of the log file is

Error: private key password verification failed

this means you did not use the correct password for the private key (or perhaps the 'button' did not ask for the password). If you're using NetworkManager then there should be a popup for the private key password.
