Thank you. I followed your advice and now can get on line. I would have liked to have done it via a network connection. Do you know if I can incorporate your method  into a network choice?

Assuming I will not be able to get bookvpn to work as a network choice, it is not obvious to me how to create the button. I suspect that I should make a virtual link from openvpn to the desktop and then edit the link to add
--config vpnbook.conf

Whereis openvpn produces:

robins@robins-EP35-DS3L:~$ whereis openvpn
openvpn: /usr/sbin/openvpn /etc/openvpn /usr/lib/openvpn /usr/include/openvpn /usr/share/openvpn /usr/share/man/man8/openvpn.8.gz
robins@robins-EP35-DS3L:~$

Using your method I am having a problem turning off the vpn so that I can send pop3 mail. How do I stop using the vpn so that  I can send out pop3 mail? In order to send this I have had to restart  Ubuntu so at to loose the vpn connection..

Thank you  for the suggestion. I immediately ran into a problem:

/
//robins@robins-EP35-DS3L:~$ openvpn --config vpnbook.conf//
//Options error: In [CMD-LINE]:1: Error opening configuration file: vpnbook.conf//
//Use --help for more information.//
//robins@robins-EP35-DS3L:~$ //
/
In which directory should the command line be run?
I ask as I cannot find the vpnbook.conf.  I have looked in home and .config

errr, when I was referring to 'vpnbook.conf' I was referring to the config you posted earlier. Did you save that configuration file somewhere? if so, use that filename. If not, save it to
/tmp/vpnbook.conf
and run
 sudo openvpn --config /tmp/vpnbook.conf
