My router openVPN is v2.4.3. I guess I can use the latest client on my
computer to work with it.

Thanks,
James

Generally install the latest version, although on Linux you can probably
stick to whichever version your package manager provides. Different versions
shouldn't be an issue, but you could run into crypto library
(OpenSSL) compatibility issues if the age gap is several years.

To find the OpenVPN version on your router, open the command line and run
"openvpn --version". Some other commands you may want to run on both client
and router are "openvpn --show-tls" and "openvpn --show-ciphers"
to check that they have some compatible choices between them.

While I always recommend running up to date software, tread carefully if
upgrading your router firmware. Read documentation and read it again,
because things will go wrong if you use the wrong file, do things in the
wrong order, the magic numbers are off by one or the wireless antennas are
not aligned with the horns of the unicorn standing on the north pole of
Mars.
