We have the same problem of limited flash. I gave up trying to build full
featured firmware for those devices. The cost of optimising for those old
devices is not worth the effort for us. It's more cost effective to target
a minimum of 8 MB and keep our workflow simple and avoid crazy
optimisations and hacks.

It's possible to build a minimal firmware that can work on 4MB devices, but
there's no tutorial on how to do this. If anyone wants to write one, get
involved! This is a good way to start contributing to make openwisp easier
to use and grow the community around it. The more active contributors there
are, the easier it will be to add features, fix bugs, write documentation
and tutorials.
