Hi Martin,
the Marvell-version of u-boot doesn't offer direct ubi support.
Assuming you might not want to replace the bootloader, you can first
generate an uImage including an initramdisk which got ubiformat (install
mtd-utils package from packages feed), boot that via tftp and use it to
format the flash and write the filesystem.
However, a newer version of u-boot for sheevaplug is included in OpenWrt
and that one should do ubi and therefore even be able to load the
kernel-image from a ubi volume, but i didn't try that yet, nor got any
idea if the implementation of ubi in u-boot is compatible with the one
found in recent kernels...
Thank you for having a look at this!

This updates and syncs tools/mtd-utils and packages/utils/mtd-utils to one

mtd-utils to generate an ubi image on the host and flash it using ubiformat on
the target (kirkwood in my case).
Thanks for the patches, before I try them, I'd like to ask: Do I loose
the ability to flash the images from the original uboot bootloader,
that came with the device? At the moment I flash via serial cable and
tftp.
Thanks in advance!
bye
