What board are you using? For me it looks like the tg3 version in the
mainline Linux kernel does not support your board. What error message and
other messages related to tg3 are you getting with trunk?
The tg3 driver is the mainline Linux driver, which is maintained by
Broadcom and the other driver you linked is similar an also maintained by
Broadcom.
My current assumption is that you are missing the broadcom phy driver.
