Comment (by nathana):
I am new here (well, not new to OWRT, but traditionally have not
participated in/contributed to public development), so I hesitate to step
on toes by questioning other's decisions or to re-open tickets like this
one in order to second-guess the stated resolution (although it is also
unclear to me if anybody will see this if I add this comment but DON'T re-
open the ticket)...
...but is there any particular reason why, if you are continuing to use
SVN internally, that you don't want to provide read-only, anon SVN access?
Is this just a security measure?
The reason I ask is that there is plenty of stuff in SVN that is not (as
far as I can tell) exposed via Git. And not only are some things not in
Git, the only place they exist is in SVN, so once that goes away for good,
that data is gone (from the public) for good. I refer mostly to old
stuff, but despite its age, it is stuff that still has value to those who
are, for better or worse, maintaining custom embedded systems that are
still based on those older platforms. For example, without anon SVN, it
is impossible to get a snapshot of the Kamikaze package source feeds.
If you will not provide anon SVN access, perhaps you would entertain a
request to bring over EVERYTHING that is in SVN to Git? And if not, why
not, especially since you never saw reason to delete it from SVN anyway?
(What is that old code hurting by continuing to exist?)
I guess I will go ahead and do a complete clone of the temp. SVN server
for my personal use so that I don't end up totally screwed, but where does
that leave others who might find themselves in a position similar to mine,
and who find that they need access to that stuff, but a few months from
now after it is too late for them?
Thanks.
