Did I understand right ? : So, when not changing kernel configuration,
I am using the b43 driver, which is non proprietary, but is not from
the kernel subtree.

If it is so - where is the b43 code which is used in this case (when
only selecting CONFIG_TARGET_brcm47xx_Broadcom-b43 from "make
menuconfig")?

I try:
from
src/backfire_svn/package

find . -name b43*.*
And I get:
./mac80211/files/b43-fwcutter-fw-dirname.patch
./mac80211/files/host_bin/b43-fwsquash.py
