For more information on how to use the serial port, the wiki explains it
better than me: http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/hardware/port.serial
It's a lot of text, but it's really useful so you don't accidentally
destroy the router, especially the section on Talking and Listening

It also lists USB adapters you can use with your computer to connect to the
serial header, here is a good one listed there:
