So far I use my newly born router as a wireless adapter. It seems to
work well, except not being able to access to OpenWrt from the IP
address I set up for it (IP is 192.168.0.1, different than
192.168.1.1), even though I was able to, earlier this session.
If I understand you correct:
Your internet-router has an active dhcp-server, that gives your LAN
adresses in the 192.168.1.x-subnet.
Your OpenWRT/wrt54g-box has a fix'ed ip-address 192.168.0.1. A different
subnet from your LAN. When you try to enter a not-local
address on your PC, it sends the request to its default gateway - the
internetrouter.
Have you tried to give the ethernet-card of your computer a fix'ed
ip-address of f.x. 192.168.0.234, subnet 255.255.255.0 and then connect
to a LAN-port on the OpenWRT/wrt54g-box with cable.
If I understand your setup correct, then you should be able to connect
to the OpenWRT on 192.168.0.1 and change its ip-address to a not used
address on your LAN 192.168.1.x.
