If the server you're using doesn't support XEP-0227 ("Portable
Import/Export Format for XMPP-IM Servers"), then I agree you might
have a problem.

There's a page on Wikipedia, but I haven't looked at it in a while.
It's a challenge to keep such a page up to date (I know, because I
maintained the ancient one).
