Ron,
If they are connecting through sql*net (as opposed to bequeath)
the parameter in the sqlnet.ora file on the server
SQLNET.EXPIRE_TIME = 10
should poll for dead connections.
Not sure of this implementation on 7.3.
Is the client 7.3 and server 8.x?
