That's the problem.  Should...  It never worked for me (8.1.5, 8.1.6) and I had to write a script to take care of these types of connections.

    If they are connecting through sql*net (as opposed to bequeath)
    the parameter in the sqlnet.ora file on the server

    SQLNET.EXPIRE_TIME = 10

    should poll for dead connections.
    Not sure of this implementation on 7.3.
    Is the client 7.3 and server 8.x?
