Yes Virginia, you can have two instances with the same name on the same Unix server. We use them to upgrade database versions. The old one remains intact until the users accept the new one. All we change is the listener parameters for the ORACLE_HOME. An that's the trick; the ORACLE_HOMEs have to be different. Although we use homes for different versions, I don't see a reason why you can't install the same rdbms version under two different homes.
You can restore the database to a different host and ultimately end up with it renamed to prod1 without using RMAN by combining a recovery with a rename. Perform an Alternate Host Restore/Recovery and then rename the database by recreating the control file. There are a few articles/tip sheets out there for renaming the database. The alternate host restore/recovery will be specific to your backup mechanism but in a nutshell; restore the hot backup to the alternate host then recover it to whatever point you want. You now have a working database to rename. Thanks for the opportunity to exercise my mind.
