In Oracle's point of view you will use 'alter database rename datafile'
command when : In case of media recovery AND you cannot restore the data
files it its original location :
A) you will restore the datafile to new location
B) issue 'alter database rename file' command to update controlfile.
C) And then start your recovery process....

Well, one reason for it is that 'alter database rename file' does not
require taking the database down, just offlining the datafile ( or
tablespace, too lazy to RTFM, you do it :)

Subject: What is the point to use "alter database rename
file" command?
Hi list,
What is the point to use "alter database rename file"
command to move datafile? as we will need to update
controle file anyway. So why not do the following directly
to move datafile:
- alter database backup contrlfile to trace and modify
the location of datafile.
- startup nomount and run the script inorder to update
the controlfile. It works fine...
So what is the point of "alter database rename file" command? Thanks in
advance. Regards, -Jalil
