Not very complex at all.  Oracle leaves all the complexity to you...

Check documentation for the V$SESSION_LONGOPS view and the
DBMS_APPLICATION_INFO packaged procedures/functions used to populate it...

Oracle has gradually been "instrumenting" some of its operations to report
to V$SESSION_LONGOPS, such as RMAN and PX operations;  not sure of the
current complete list...
