In 9i Oracle can handle control file recoveries just fine without a repository if configured correctly. In 8i, you can actually recover the control file even without a repository but you have to use the dbms_backup_restore package to do so.
I have not heard anything about the repository going away. I wonder how they would support RMAN scripting and enterprise backup and recovery reporting in this case. RF Robert G.
