Alex Someone may reply with better information, but we have been doing disaster recoveries with RMAN, using just the control file. In our case, we are just trying to recover the level 0 backup, but I can't see a reason you couldn't incorporate the level 1 backup as well. If you are just getting started, I would recommend that you purchase Robert Freeman's book Oracle9i RMAN Backup & Recovery. If you are on Oracle8i, Robert provides plenty of details to allow you to use his book against Oracle8i. I don't see a problem doing what you are proposing. I have just been recovering the Level 0 backup, but going forward to the level 1 should not be a problem. Some people report that in Oracle8i they have been able to extract the control file from the backup, but I gave up and just back it up separately after the RMAN backup. You also need any archive logs created during the RMAN backup.
