One additional consideration on this topic is the politics of the situation.
If your shop is one where development has undue influence on upper
management decisions (i.e. the tail wagging the dog), the politics might be
such that garbage is deployed and it's expected that the support people
(i.e. sys admin and DBA) will throw enough hardware and general tweaking to
get the app to run fast enough to be useful.  In such a situation, a monster
SGA might not be much help, but you can at least point to the monster SGA
and say "There it is!"

... Not that I would know of any such shop where this situation occurs ...
