For more robust date operations, you might research the date related functions such as
add_months, months_between, etc.
Look at the documentation at http://technet.oracle.com
or search the web for code samples. These are fun to play with.

Select to_date(date2)-to_date(date1) from dual;
exemple:
SQL> select to_date('16/02/2003')-to_date('12/02/2003') from dual;
TO_DATE('16/02/2003')-TO_DATE('12/02/2003')
