Yep, it was initially supposed to be compatible with minix, used it's file
system etc...
I just read Linus'es posts to minix newsgroups from archives about his small
project back at '91 or so, where he stated that his experimental OS for
hackers isn't ever going to be as big and professional as GNU Hurd for
example...

I've used linux from it's kernel releases 1.2 or 1.3, don't remember
exactly, but Slackware was the distro.
