Dennis, I'm not sure that your explanation, while perfectly accurate and
correct, is a good service to this list. That has happened before, the list
was clogged by trivial questions, to the point it became useless to the more
advanced users. With all due respect, losing Cary, Anjo, Steve Adams, Wolfgang or some other advanced folks would also mean losing a very valuable resource.
Deadlock is a basic notion in software engineering and asking this question
on this list signifies mental laziness and unwillingness to consult the literature. My response directed the person to the basic college texts in
operating systems. If he knows what's good for him, he'll read one, otherwise
you should expect questions like "what's a semaphore" or "what's an SMP machine"? When I wandered what does $ref->{"key"} mean or how to use
Getopt::Long, I didn't send an email to the list, I figured it out myself. I do expect readiness to read and invest a mental effort from other participants of this list. Aiding and abetting those who are not willing to do so isn't, in my opinion, a good service to this list.
