Well, at least you didn't say that I got it wrong. ;-) I think your
answer was the right one, learn some computer science, but I was concerned
that it might seem a little too intimidating. A really bright person can
pick up a lot from a C.S. textbook, but some people might be frustrated. I'm
not sure all the future DBAs are going to arrive with a C.S. degree. I see
more and more people that don't think a computer can be controlled without a
mouse. Maybe what I should have done was find a Web site that had a
definition because that might have led to further discovery and maybe
eventually reading a C.S. textbook. Here is one:

And yup it has semaphore and SMP defined as well. Thanks and I'll try to use
that in the future to save bandwidth.

Dennis, I'm not sure that your explanation, while perfectly accurate and
correct, is a good service to this list. That has happened before, the list
was clogged by trivial questions, to the point it became useless to the more
advanced users. With all due respect, losing Cary, Anjo, Steve Adams,
Wolfgang
or some other advanced folks would also mean losing a very valuable
resource.
Deadlock is a basic notion in software engineering and asking this question
on this list signifies mental laziness and unwillingness to consult the
literature. My response directed the person to the basic college texts in
operating systems. If he knows what's good for him, he'll read one,
otherwise
you should expect questions like "what's a semaphore" or "what's an SMP
machine"? When I wandered what does $ref->{"key"} mean or how to use
Getopt::Long, I didn't send an email to the list, I figured it out myself. I

do expect readiness to read and invest a mental effort from other
participants
of this list. Aiding and abetting those who are not willing to do so isn't,
in
my opinion, a good service to this list.
