Jay,

   You are new to Oracle I guess? Don't mistake ANNOUNCEMENT with
RELEASE or AVAILABILITY. The announcement is just to keep the press
busy, the competition anxious and help me convince customers that
perhaps it is time they think about migrating their remaining 7.3.4
databases. Big marketing event, Larry prophecizes about the future of IT
and sometimes mentions the new Oracle release en passant (some may
remember that Oracle8 was totally eclipsed by the then big idea, the
network computer). In the trenches, business as usual. In about 6 months
or so some versions, usually on the wrong platforms, will become
available. But I am ready to bet that in 12 months there will still be a
large number of databases running 8.1.7, a small majority will be
running 9.2 and very few 10g will be in production (mainly because
10.1.0.3, the first really usable for production, will have been out for
a couple of months only).
