Good idea. I am actually planning on write something like that myself. I have wrote on a smaller scale one just to extract data for our company's database (8.1.7.4) and it was extremely handy in one of our recovery situation where a complete recovery wasn't possible.
And I am using Java as well. So maybe we can combine efforts.
