I see this from time to time on our HP systems. The terminal emulator on the client gets out of sync with the host, especially in regards to CTL-H and the Backspace key. I've seen this caused by applications that set the emulator into raw mode (Oracle Applications 10.7 character) and then back as well as su - user ... exit.
That CTL-H trick embedded in a filename is how I test our Jr admins. Yes... I can be a tad evil at times... My unix screen behaves weired sometimes it doesn't print any character I type and some time it prints characters which I never type ( in this particular case ).
