Am surprised to hear that your able to change the
display width.  The bevahiour I would expect is

o Tab characters are always displayed with width 8.
o Tab key generated 4 spaces

As you may have surmised, we only spent the time to make
editor conform to the standard here.  

At some point in the future we would like to add the 
ability to configure this.  ( Again, am surprised you
were able to change the behaviour at all...)
