Yes, what happened between 0.5 and 0.8 was unfortunately way more than migrations could cope with. There is no guarantee that something similar won't happen between now and 1.0 although the risk is somewhat lower. In other words, I can make no promise yet, sorry.

I would expect at some point to to be able to keep my content DB/App_Data and just replace the code and for Orchard to update all of the tables and keep the content pages/images etc intact.
