One important factor that gets overlooked sometimes, I think, is that with
NHibernate, Orchard gains a lot of credibility with a big segment of
developers (namely, the guys who live and breathe OSS / alt.net).  If the MS
crew put together a platform that cobbles together MS products, it would
resonate a lot less with them than a platform that uses the best OS has to
offer and the best MS has to offer.

Granted, as a pure engineering decision, that doesn't hold water, but others
have answered the engineering angle. :D
