I have grown most of my varied collection in clear, or at least translucent
pots for several years, as it allows me to see what's going on in the root
zone.

Algae can be a nuisance, but a periodic drenching with a disinfectant such as
Physan, Zero-Tol, household bleach, etc., keeps it at bay.
