Ok, I do not have numbers to back this up, but if you compare the advertising
revenue brought in by other full colour magazines such as Sports Illustrated
(Nike, Gatorade, Adidas, etc.) or Rolling Stone (Coke products, etc) with the
advertising revenue brought in by ORCHIDS, I think that you would find a large
gap. A full colour magazine takes incredible expense to print, especially
when it is produced in smaller numbers.
Some comments I want to put in here:
1) A run of 25,000 (or more ... ask Lee of Jim) is not "small numbers" [by standards of Orchid journals, of course, not by standards of "Harry Potter"]
2) I don't really think that it is the main duty of the organ of any orchid society to obtain as much advertisement revenue as possible.
For readers, an Orchid journal with 75% advertisement is not necessarily what they want. And the 75% advertisement really bring enough revenue to keep the price very, very low!
As a former publisher of a very well illustrated colour orchid journal, I know what I am talking off. If I would have had 30 % advertisement, not only Schlechteriana would still exist, but it would be very profitable.
I don't want to "spit in anyone's soup," but it is my educated guess that much of the (considerable) revenue brought in through "Orchids" goes to fill other "holes". But that an issue that the members of the AOS should cope with.
However. I don't consider it correct to make believe that the high price of orchids (and therefore AOS Membership) is caused by printing costs for "Orchids".
