Dear Mr. Whitlow;
What you said! The goverment does know the answer to that question. Also,
Manuel Arias had Peru's permission to export the orchids. I do not know
whether the Peruvian Abasssador wrote to the US. Prosecutor about Manuel having
the proper export permits-Peru is conscientious regarding orchid conservation.
The tragedy of the story is that they threw the book at the Norris orchid
nursery. I remeber years back in Texas (the 80's and 90's when some crooks
including an attorney, Anthony Steel, were caught trying to sell a switch to a
nuclear device to the Iraqis before the 1st Gulf war, in exchange for oil
concessions in Iraq & money. Part of the deal took place in a nursery in
Spring, but some of the documents were retrieved and a damning tip was
forwarded to the FBI. Anthony Steel raised six- figured sums for the Republican
party with some of the proceeds, but was stripped of his US. citizenship by
President Clinton in 1996. One of the witnesses heard one of Steel's relatives -
a man VP. Cheney once called "the village idiot" , vowed to stick the nursery
owner in Spring. The owner's were innocent parties to the felony that took
place on their property. So they got slammed, in a wag the dog case, for
something that a judge probably would have sentenced George Norris to a
suspended sentence. As the rock musician Elvis Costello sang - "You've got to
watch your step" today.

I want to thank all of you that wrote me and ODG with your comments on the
two issues I presented recently. They were not published here to get them
going
again, but as a different look at things. I was not condemning nor
supporting anyone - the case happened to lend itself to some straightfoward
questions.
However, some information came to me that shed a different light on the case
and I wish that I felt free to pass that on. As many of you know, I was one
who also spelled out the case against them, based on what I knew at the time.
I do have one comment or question to add regarding guilt: which are you
willing to do - accept guilt and a plea bargain with minimal penalty, or spend
you
life savings, your retirement and all you have worked for your entire life to
prove your were right? Don't ever think that the government doesn't know
the answer to that question.
Thank you again for your comments.
Carson E. Whitlow
