David, I agree totally with your comments. I have been growing orchids for 40 years
and have learnt a lot from peers, literature and actually growing many various genera.
It always pains me to hear NON orchid growers ( ie people from the Gardening field )
air their ignorance when it comes to orchids. Unfortunately, this ignorance seems to
prevail in some orchid growers as well. I have yet to read ANY decent argument put up
by any of the Taxonomist knockers on this list as to WHY any particular taxonomic
statement may be incorrect on any orchid. It appears that
"Thou shall believe what I want to believe", be the case. There have been or still are
people on this list with great knowledge, formal or otherwise that could add to
discussions on taxon' topics but I fear choose not to because of the crap they may
receive in return.
The one thing that I will through in is that there is the possibility that comments
lodged by some Formally educated people with very little practical experience in
growing hybrid orchids AND studying the particular characteristics that certain plants
pass on to their progeny shows a distinct weakness and they should really take advice
on that area from experienced growers before falling into that 'ignorance area'.
