that is the point ... the classical example is Phragmipedium Sedenii.. Veitch claims it is longifolium x schlimii (or the other way around, who cares) but the remakes look different as that what Veitch illustrates in his "Manual" .... Now the hybrids of Cattleya labiata ... are they made with labiata, warneri, or ???? and I have given other examples ... Paphiopedilum Frau Ida Brandt .... Guido, your message gives me great heart that someone other that my self ( as a mainly hybrid grower ) is concerned with what parents are being used to produce the seedlings I wish to purchase. With the time I have spent in orchids, I have seen the flowering of many hundreds of seedlings of many different genera. It never ceases to amaze me what comes out. As you stated, many plants used in breeding are not what is on the label ( or conveniently changed ) because of the REMAKES done by a nursery other than the originator, in recent times quoting " using exact same parents" and of course they look 'something' like the original.
In primary hybrids of any genera and subsequent breeding, one must face the fact that what you have is just that. To determine the exact parents may be pure chance. I still hold the fact that there are very few orchid growers in the world that are dishonest, they have just been victums of the miss use of names/varieties/forma and cannot be condemned. we just have to make the best of it. IE forget the RHS registrations and use them for what they are, a list of names.

There must be new start .... Say ... 1. January 2005. All hybrids and awards that have been registered or awarded before that date should be invalidated until it is scientifically proved what they are. How can one uphold an award for Phragmipedium schlimii "Birchwood" (for example) when we all know for 25 years that the fricking critter is a hybrid (and not even a primary) hybrid. How can one uphold the P. schlimii award given to the Hanne Popow ???
There is no solution that makes sense other than to scrap the whole mess, make rules that are applicable and fool proof and start all over ... And if a plant is turned in for judging or a hybrid registered and there is the slightest doubt about its identity ... well don't award or register it .
