Hello Dave, Phil and anyone who is interested in it, I read with interest your comments about nutrients. I use solely horsemanure for my growing medium and never add extra feeding. For Cymbidium and phalenopsis I use full strength horse manure, with watering every day, because the salinity in the cells of the cymbidium group is high enough to draw nutrients from the stronger solution. With the Cattleya group and the Disa I use a buffer and plant the roots in the sphagmum moss with horsemanure under and, with watering everyday, the nutrient strength is lowered and and the roots grow down into the manure as soon as the strength in the horse manure is suitable. I leave it to the plant to send the roots into the manure and for that reason you can't go wrong.
I know that you are right with your ppm figures but with my way of growing I don't need to worry about that.
