I raised the possibility of trying to grow orchids using horse manure with a compatriot at our Orchid Society. He expressed doubts as to the wisdom of such a venture. Apart from the smell and the haven it would provide for mycorrhyzal pathogens in the tropics, the limited availability of such equine by-product would necessitate sourcing it from the local racing stables. He assured me that Cattleyas grown in this media would probably do quite well for a while, but would soon jump out of their pots and record twenty seconds over their first quarter mile down the road. However I am sure that this eventuality is restricted to the Darwin situation and could not possibly occur elsewhere.
