Peter,
Unfortunately, what you claim to have learned is in error; see below.
1a) AOS only considers plants that have already been encountered inside the AOS system. Untrue
All comparisons are purely internal. Untrue
1b) AOS judges are not expected to make reference to sources outside the AOS internal system. Untrue
When viewing an "unusual" species, they are not expected to look at pictures (diagrams or text) of the species on websites or widely-available reference books. Untrue
2) the reciprocal-standard arrangement is a fraud (at least, with the AOS) because there is no reciprocity involved. I don't recognize what you are talking about by "reciprocal-standard arrangement". Please explain further.
3) the AOS uses classes of award that don't exist elsewhere. Actually this is untrue. Many judging systems do have the same type awards but use different names for them, but the intent is the same.
OK, you can justify this within the system (thanks, Nik and Jose, I do
understand), but the CBR is still an award .. Yes it is. This seems to be the only thing you learned that is true in your exchange with Andy Easton,
the grower gets a certificate with "AOS Award" written across the top, and gets the buzz
that comes with winning something. Again untrue. The only AOS Awards that is granted to the grower are the cultural awards; all others are awarded to the plant. Yes, some people get a buzz when a plant they grew gets an award.
BTW the Certificate of Botanical Merit (CBM) was the predecessor of the Certificate of Botanical Recognition (CBR) and are still reconized but no longer granted by AOS Judges.
