OK. Referring again to the handbook (sorry to be such a prig as to always refer to the handbook)

Section 3.2.9 Librarian
A librarian may be appointed by the chair to keep the center's reference books, to order others as authorized and to have them available at all judging sessions. The required reference books are listed in section 5.2 (1-3); other recomended books are listed in section 9.5. The librarian may also serve as the slide chairman at the discretion of the chair.

[So there you have it, some are required and some recommended.]

Required:

Section 5.2 Judging Material

The judging center shall maintain a permanent supply of judging materials necessary for its use. These include:
1) Current edition of the Handbook, AOS Register of Awards and its supplements, and a complete set of the Awards Quarterly.
2) A copy of Sanders Complete list of Orchid Hybrids, copies of addenda and published lists, and all reference texts that the center committee may be able to secure.
3) A copy of the latest edition of the Handbook of Orchid Nomenclature and Registration
[snip the rest]

[As I said most people now use Wildcatt instead of Sanders.]

Recommended:
Of the Section 9.5 list of books I posted yesterday the handbooks says: "Some publications listed in Section 5.2 are mandatory for use whenever AOS judging is conducted, and others on the following lists should be acquired for the libraries of judging center committees as rapidly as circumstances permit."

Now, Peter, as to who pays. Two copies of the AQs are sent to the centers by the AOS when they are published. The center probably pays for these, I can't imagine the AOS giving anything away. *G* Books are bought by the center for their libraries from center funds. Center funds are always hard to come by and usually arise from orchid sales or support from sponsoring societies (again, hard to come by). Judges/students buy their own books or Wildcatt. When applying to the AOS for acceptance into the judging program one is asked to list the reference books in their personal libraries. One of my friends was highly recommended to flesh theirs out when s/he became a student. (ie buy books)

Ironically, yesterday after posting this list and saying the Pac Central had a great library, I wanted to look at a reference book that I knew was in our center's library, but the person in charge of the library didn't bring it that night. So. Again you are only as good as the people in your center. *G*

Thanks Kathy, for going to the trouble of posting that book-list.

I certainly can see what the AOS is getting at ... any centre that had
all those books would be quite well set up for references on 90% of
the species they were likely to encounter. I've got a couple more
questions: (a) Which ones are mandatory ?, and (b) who finances these
libraries ?

Can anyone supply information on which references other AOS judging
centres hold, and which ones they actually use ?

Cheers,
