Sandra Hardy was very correct when she was questioning the use of moss by the Japanese for only decorative purposes.  Since the mid 1600's, the Japanese have been cultivating Neofinetia falcata (Fuuran) orchids in moss, and the elaborate methods are discussed in the old Japanese texts.  The use of the moss is for year long growth of the Fuuran and the highly treasured Fuukirans.  If one studies the photographs at New World Orchids' website, the ball of moss is hollow which allows for faster drying times, one of the "secrets" for this type of cultivation.  I currently grow about 400 NF in moss in my greenhouse here in Oklahoma, and they grow very well for me.
