We grow mainly paphs under lights and have found that growing them in the semi-clear Rand's aircone pots allows one to actually see if the moss is dry below the surface. Alan Koch of Gold Country Orchids taught us that we needed to leave an open area in the bottom of the pot when using moss-one wraps the roots in the moss but doesn't shove the root/moss ball all the way down into the pot-again this is easier seen in the aircone pots. We get excellent root growth and really don't need to fertilize. Only draw back is if you have to spray for mealybugs, etc you can prematurely "kill" the moss sometimes and have to repot sooner. If we do use a clay pot with moss, we put it into a plastic one to keep the moss from drying out too quickly...
