Hi Folks

In my research into Paph. micranthum, I found all of Fowlie’s publications on its varieties.  The original publication in 1989 did not include Latin diagnoses, and as such were invalid.    In 1993, he republished the four varieties in the Orchid Digest (page 186), and included Latin diagnoses and indicated that herbarium specimens were deposited.  None the less, they are deemed invalid.  Averyanov, in his Slipper Orchids of Vietnam, indicates that Fowlie violated Article 33.1 of the ICBN which states:

33.1. A combination (autonyms excepted) is not validly published unless the author definitely associates the final epithet with the name of the genus or species, or with its abbreviation.

Could someone please explain how he violated this rule?

Thanks again!
