Sue,
I have not found any instructions on using the Bayer products on orchids.
I first looked at the Rose & Flower Insect Killer (spray) which has 0.012%
Imidacloprid(Merit) and 0.003% Cyfluthrin.
Then Tree & Shrub Insect Control (poured soil around tree) has 1.47%
Imidacloprid (no Cyfluthrin).
In reference to your math question, .5 ounce of Tree & Shrub mixed with 2
gallons of water equals approximately .012%, similar to the spray.
I myself am concerned mostly with mealybugs. Adding a few drops of liquid
soap helps any solution stay where it is sprayed and it may help to
suffocate the pesky bugs! I expect that the weaker spray of RFIK will not
become as systemic in the orchids, if at all, so I spray again 10 days
later.

Of course these are just my anecdotal experiences. It is best to follow the
label instructions. For example, "Apply the product to flowering plants
during early morning or late evening, when bees are not present. Do not use
in small, enclosed areas where spray may be inhaled."
Healthy orchids!
