In reply to Bettina's problem with slugs, I have purchased a product
containing 7.5% metaldehyde called Trails End from (they have other
locations in CA) --
Ag Rx - (805) 487-0696
751 South Rose Ave
Oxnard, CA 93030
It is only available here in Florida in the 3.5% formulation. It
works very well for slugs, snails, and the relatively hard to control
bush snails (just because of their size). The product is a hard small
granular a little larger than builders sand that holds up well to
irrigation and can be broadcast right over the plants and seedflats with
absolutely no signs of phytotoxicity, even if the granules get lodged in
the crowns of seedling Paphs and Phals. It does not get moldy or degrade
like the larger pellets. Applied near dusk and in the morning you will
have dead snails all over the particles.
If you have a large infestation as you evidently do, you should
follow label instructions and apply often. Your biggest problem will be
that your neighbors will not be doing any control and new invading waves
will come from them. Once you have gotten control of your growing area,
all you should have to do is monthly (or so) apply a dead band area
around your perimeter.
        Hope this helps --
