I recently received my newsletter from the Slipper Orchid Alliance, and it had a long article on phrag species. It listed - among other things - the number of offspring and progeny of each plant. I had always thought that offspring and progeny were the same thing, but the listings would sometimes be different numbers. For instance, Phrag hirtzii was listed with 2 offspring and 4 progeny; another one was listed with 13 offspring and 27 progeny. The author notes
"After each entry I list . . . the number of offspring as well as progeny (which includes the offspring!) produced by that entry. Note that the number of progeny is always at least equal to the number of offspring and that these two numbers are equal if the number of progeny is 0 or 1." Would someone please clarify the difference for me?
Thanks.
